For students though, the process is a little different. Students need approval from admins in order to create a board.
First, go the right of your Yellowdig feed. Here you can see several menus and items. Go to the one that says "Grow your Network" and select "Add a Board" from the menu.
Once you click this, a pop-up that looks like the one below will appear
Enter the name of your board, select a category, and choose whether you want the board or be closed or open. Once the admin approves the board, it will be created. They can find out how to that here.
