If points are enabled for a Community, after you have selected that Community from the pull down at the top and you are looking at the Feed, your points for that Community are broken down on the left side of your Feed, just below the name of the Community, within the Point Bar.
The Point Speedometer on the left side of the Bar indicates your rate of progress toward the 100% participation goal relative to the number of points possible at this point in the semester. The Weekly Points on the right side of the Bar indicates how many points you've earned this week out of the total possible for the week (i.e., the weekly max).
The Point Bar above indicates that the user is on pace to earn 74.5% of the points necessary to reach the 100% participation target. It also indicates that the user has earned 0 points for the current week out of the 1250 point weekly max. In order to reach the 100% participation target, this user will need to earn more points per week than they are currently averaging.
- An important note: The point total for your Yellowdig Community might not match the point total for the Yellowdig grading column in your LMS (i.e., Learning Management System; Blackboard, Moodle, Canvas, etc.). This is by design. Yellowdig passes back your grade as a percentage. For example, if an instructor makes Yellowdig participation worth 100 total points in the LMS, the user above would have 74.5 out of 100 points in their Yellowdig grade column, since 74.5% of 100 points = 74.5 points. As the course continues, the display on your Point Speedometer will typically decrease at the beginning of each week to account for points you should earn that week, indicating that you need to "speed up" until you get to at least 100% or you reach your weekly max.
- A key takeaway: If your LMS grade column for Yellowdig indicates fewer points than the maximum, that doesn't mean you failed to reach the weekly maximum in Yellowdig. It simply means that you're not yet on pace to hit the 100% participation target. For example, if you miss several weeks' worth of points at the beginning of the term, it may take many weeks of earning the weekly max to increase your pace to 100%. The moral is this: if you reach the weekly maximum every week, you never need to worry about being on pace to reach the 100% participation target.
You can always click on the Point Bar or My Participation on the left-hand menu for a more detailed breakdown of the rules for point earning and your point activity. The My Participation page contains a graph of your participation levels over time. If you discover that you always post the day before the weekly reset, procrastinate less! Your experience on the platform and the quality of your discussions will improve immensely as a result. Depending on the point settings you can probably also earn more points on your posts if they are up for other students to respond to.
Finally, keep in mind that the grade sync for Yellowdig runs on a schedule for each Community. Points earned in Yellowdig will not immediately be displayed in your LMS gradebook, but should definitely show up within a couple of hours! For this reason, the points indicated inside the Yellowdig platform will be the most up-to-date and accurate record of your progress toward your participation goal.
